Anyone ever look at aftermarket electric e brakes?

I was thinking that my M37 truck might be a bit tricky in a hill situation with modern cars breathing down my neck. These appear to be a push button e brake controller kit, I see them on various trucks and hot rods . I can’t reach the e brake very well in the truck, it’s way down low by the floor and on the opposite side of the gear change. But the truck has drum brakes, I’m not sure it can work without disks? I wish there was some kind of anti roll back device like Mazda used to have. When I rented an SUV last time I went home to Hawaii for a wedding I tried it out on that and it was pretty nice. The tranny in the M37 is not very forgiving and I don’t want to avoid going some places in it. I hate how modern car drivers have no concern for what it’s like t drive older manuals, they stop in front of you on hills or creep right up on your ass on a hill, stresses me out. I don’t drive the Z to SF for that reason, plus the roads beat the shit out of you with that suspension.

it looks like it’s supposed to work with any setup which applies the parking brake/emergency brake by pulling on a cable.  shouldn’t matter whether your parking brake is disc, drum-inside-disc, or just plain drum brakes.  looks like all this thing does is do the cable pulling for you.

Yeah that makes sense, oh yeah duh, it splits the end of the cable into two. I might consider this for the truck and maybe the Z. I always wondered why companies never did what mazda did with the anti rollback device. In SF it would be awesome. I was looking at the Wilwood e brake calipers and didn’t look at the other pictures.

er, what?  hill-hold or hill start assist isn’t just a Mazda thing.

A couple of people on the Transit forum have converted the manual pull handle e-brake. The regular handle interferes with swivel seats or they want easier access when walking to the back.

Apparently they work. At least one person used a kit like yours.  Expensive.  One dude rigged it up himself for much cheaper using an off-the-shelf linear actuator.

Like JimZ says, it shouldn’t matter what your e-brake is at the wheel. This just pulls the cable for you.

Oh. Oh.  Oh!!!  Please research this, solve and report back the “best answer”, as I’ve got a 912 we did a brake upgrade on, but my guy managed to e-brake-delete me in the process.  So, please let me know what the best answer is.

Subaru has a hill holder feature too. Seem like it would work fine on the truck. The z is so light and easy to drive, don’t see a reason for that.

Subaru used hill-hold setups for a long time, but I don’t believe I’ve ever seen it in a Mazda.

Try it on an SF hill! I don’t even bring it there. Yeah mostly thinking of the truck.

It is used on hot rods etc. that have had a delete. Looks like this is the best option, it’s like $500 for the kit but it’s well made.

I’ve driven around SF with my manual Mazda 3 and no auto brake, it was tricky but not impossible. Certainly did some tire chirping .

Yeah I thought about making one, the kit has a double wall housing and is very well made according to people, they end up on SEMA cars all the time I guess.

Yeah it’s possible but all the people getting right up on your ass is no fun. If it was easy to install a quick button would be cool.

You know what really got me? The bay bridge toll plaza. It took like 20 minutes of creeping forward to get through the toll plaza. I got a cramp in my clutch leg.

Oh I bet that could be bad, I go across the GG Bridge so I don’t have much experience. Or maybe just get shot?! I just don’t drive the Z south much unless it’s a day off and I am heading to something specific.

There is this too, I don’t know much about it though, seems to just work on the pressure not a cable which makes me nervous.

That was the last time I drove a manual car to SF. After that I always took the subaru wagon with an auto transmission.

My Transit has a hill-holder function. In an automatic.

Why ??

Yeah, I’d talked about a more sophisticated “line lock” scheme that would work on pressure, but both felt one of the cable systems would be best.

Thanks!

thanks!  It looks like it might work.  I was just under that car working on the seat attachments.
